Pippo ha scritto:Per finire, ecco un estratto dal miglior testo esistente sul legno (non scritto da me, ovviamente  ):

Wood Handbook
Wood as an engineering material. General Technical Report 113.
Madison, WI: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory. 463 p., p. 1-25

Mahogany
The name mahogany is presently applied to several distinct
kinds of commercial wood. The original mahogany wood,
produced by Swietenia mahagoni, came from the American
West Indies. This was the premier wood for fine furniture
cabinet work and shipbuilding in Europe as early as the
1600s. Because the good reputation associated with the name
mahogany is based on this wood, American mahogany is
sometimes referred to as true mahogany. A related African
wood, of the genus Khaya, has long been marketed as
?African mahogany? and is used for much the same purposes
as American mahogany because of its similar properties and
overall appearance. A third kind of wood called mahogany,
and the one most commonly encountered in the market, is
?Philippine mahogany.? This name is applied to a group of
Asian woods belonging to the genus Shorea. In this chapter,
information on the ?Philippine mahoganies? is given under
lauan and meranti groups.

http://www.siu.edu/~ebl/leaflets/mahogany.htm
... in particolare...

In March of 1960, a study of American Mahogany was carried out in Mexico. It resulted in enough fruits and flowers with four parts to disprove the myth that American Mahogany is only five parted. This being the only diagnostic difference between African Mahogany, Khaya and American Mahogany, Sweitenia, the classification of Khaya needs to be changed back to Swientenia sengalensis (Lamb, 1966). The Yoruban insistence on both Mahoganies being the same tree during the 1600's in Jamaica prompted the study in 1960 which verified their belief.

Estratto da "The Bible":

Wood: The best way to relate to the sound of wood is through comparing it to another. Maple compared to African mahogany (not Philippine mahogany); Mahogany will have an approximate 20% increase in low frequency resonance over the Maple drum. The mid and high frequencies will be about the same. Maple compared to birch; Birch will have about a 10% loss in reproduction of low end and about a 20% increase in the high end, with the mid range remaining about the same. Birch will be a ?harder/brighter? sounding kit. Beech is in between Maple and Birch. Several filer woods are also used, such as basswood, Philippine mahogany, poplar, etc. These are to lessen cost and typically drums made of these woods lean more towards the tone of Birch of Beech than Maple or US/African mahogany. You can read more about this subject on the page Drum Woods.

Tony
