CYMBAL RE-CREATIONS ! With before and after soundclips !

I'd like to start off with this old 22" Avedis I've just finished re-creating. It was sent to me by a drummer from the USA.

Originally the cymbal was a 40's transtamp at 2649gr, sounding fairly aggressive IMO and everything but clicky. The idea was to make it lighter, more jazzy and darker but with a better stick definition.
The finish had to be a regular type of lathing, not a patina finish or banded lathing like some of my other work.
I've totally re-hammered and re-shaped it and lathed it down to 2330 grams.

Here's a before and after soundclip....

It now looks like this:

It's not just the lighter weight but especially also the hammering that makes a big part of the difference, I gave the cymbal thousands of hammerstrokes.

A French drummer sent me this Paiste 2002 20" Ride and asked me to re-create it into a (lighter) jazzy ride. The sound he had in mind was somewhere in between a regular jazzride and a flatride.

So (amongst others) I decided to considerably downsize the cup. As Paiste 2002 is made from B8, a soft alloy, dramatically downsizing the cup is possible, given enough hammering. It also involves hammering the rest of the cymbal, but that was necessary anyway to alter the sound of the cymbal towards a jazzy sound.

Here is the BEFORE AND AFTER CLIP

Poi pensatela come volete.

Johan, swell work as always. Too bad someone had to start whining about you writing in English - sour grapes, probably. In any case, you have your cymbals and your dedication to speak for you. Keep it up, man ;)

I have a question: how long - in terms of working hours - does it take you, on average, to alter a cymbal - a 20" ride, say? I'm guessing the 2002 mod was especially time-consuming, what with down-sizing the bell and stuff.

Oh, and if you ever need a translation into Italian just drop me a line.

I have a question for Johan: How did you learn to hammer cymbals? Do you try it on cheap cymbals to do practice?

The first cymbals I hammered 20 years ago were brand new K's I had just bought but I wanted them darker and more complex.
But it's much better to practice with cheap cymbals....

Stephen Daedalus ha scritto:I have a question: how long - in terms of working hours - does it take you, on average, to alter a cymbal - a 20" ride, say?
That can differ very much from cymbal to cymbal. Also, when you do a lot of hammering (and that's what I usually do), it needs to be spread over time with resting periods in between for the metal to settle. Anyway, if you count the working hours, on average it would be something like 5 hours. It can be less but it can also be much more.

When somebody sends me a cymbal, I first record a clip of the original. After the work I record a new clip and I mail both clips to the owner. If she/he is not happy yet, I hammer further until the owner is happy. Some people ask for several re-hammerings and fine-tunings so that can sometimes take a very long time. It can go up 10, 15 hours.
Other people are happy right away.

Sometimes the most difficult thing is to understand what the owner really wants. But I learn from that, I learn to listen to cymbals through somebody else's ears.
